MIT Initiative for New Manufacturing: Manufacturing Update - 28 May 2026.

PUBLISHED BY: MANUFACTURING AT MIT

Successful international competitors have embedded their manufacturing programs within a broader national industrial strategy in tandem with robust investments. The United States is missing a coordinated framework to align industry and government across research and development, scale-up financing, regional adoption, and workforce development.

To realize the full potential of the Manufacturing USA institutes and maximize economic returns, the United States should convene and issue a formal U.S. Industrial Strategy, integrating technology development, scale-up financing, standards leadership, trade, and workforce development to align resources and maximize the national impact of federal manufacturing programs, including Manufacturing USA institutes.

The report makes recommendations to strengthen the Manufacturing USA program across four critical areas: technology transfer, interagency and cross-network collaboration, regional manufacturing ecosystems, and education and workforce development. Together, they form a vision for what Manufacturing USA can achieve in the next decade.
