Manufacturing USA was created in 2014 to secure U.S. global leadership in advanced manufacturing by connecting people, ideas and technology. Manufacturing USA institutes convene business competitors, academic institutions and other stakeholders to test applications of new technology, create new products, and reduce cost and risk.
The network is operated by the interagency Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, which is headquartered in the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in the Department of Commerce.

In 2023, Manufacturing USA launched the Modern Makers initiative to showcase the range of career pathways available in advanced manufacturing. Overall, the network demonstrates the importance of its unique public-private partnerships in driving the future of U.S. manufacturing.
Today, Manufacturing USA continues to pursue its mission to solve industry-relevant challenges. Institutes serve as hubs for key technology areas including automation, biomanufacturing and cybersecurity, ensuring that what is invented in the U.S. can also be built in the U.S.
